Knit-a-lung for Cancer research
Everyone can help find a cure for Lung Cancer
With close ties to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL, we also know that patients and families undergoing treatment can feel alone. A simple gift from a stranger can make a huge difference. That’s why we’ve launched our Knit-A-Long (sorry, Knit-A-LUNG).
For a small donation, we’ll send you a pair of lungs (Why lungs? See below.) and ask for your participation in one of two ways. SHARE: knit something- anything- incorporating our lungs and send it back to us. We’ll distribute it to a patient undergoing treatment and pass along your encouragement and well wishes. WEAR: Knit something and ROCK YOUR LUNGS! take a pic, post it and tag us (#knitalung #P2AC). Help us build some momentum.
Where the money goes: In cancer research, new, innovative and breakthrough ideas are necessary to getting us closer to a cure. Seed grants fund researchers as they prove the veracity of these ideas. Prelude to a Cure funds that research.
Why not? COVID-19 forced us to rethink how we can fund seed grants. On a board Zoom meeting, one of our physician volunteers was knitting and telling a story about how a nonsmoking, otherwise healthy patient had passed away from lung cancer, just 11 weeks from diagnosis. As she was talking, she realized that maybe the key to funding more research was right in her hands. That’s how the #P2aC Knit-A-Lung was born.
Who is Prelude to a Cure?
Prelude to a Cure is an all-volunteer led charity dedicated to raising money to provide seed grants to cancer researchers. Learn more here.
Passion. Purpose. Progress.
How can I help?
That’s easy. Just KNIT!
For a donation of $XX, we’ll send you a pair of knitted “lungs” and a basic pattern. The pattern is for a quick bracelet and we’d love- LOVE- to have knitters send in completed bracelets to distribute to patients at the Moffitt Cancer Center, a renowned treatment center here in Tampa, FL. But there are MANY other ways to help.
There are other fun ways to help?
Funny you should ask!
Many of the Prelude team are knitters, so we want to tap into the creativity of the Yarn-iverse. The patterns we send out for a donation are pretty basic. We’d LOVE to watch you incorporate the lungs into other projects. Please post and tag us with #P2aC or #KnitALung and we’ll see them.
We’re working to add new knit-ables to the site for donations, as well.
Are YOU a cancer survivor?
First off, our (knitted) hats are off to you. It’s a terrible disease touching nearly everyone. It’s NEVER easy and we’re impressed by your fight.
If you’re a survivor, make sure you note that as you make a donation. We’ve designed a special knit-able for you. If you keep what you’ve knit, weasr it with pride. If you send it back for us to distribute to current cancer patients, know that it will mean even more to them, knowing a survivor is rooting them on.
YOU TAUGHT SURGEONS TO KNIT??
Umm. Yes and it was an adventure. One May X, 2021, We taught some a group of Moffitt Cancer Center Docs, Surgeons and Nurses to knit. In fact, the news came out to watch!
This will link to the store to make a donation and get your stuff.

What is a Seed Grant?
Seed grants typically find the initial research needed to prove an investigator’s hypothesis. Usually between $50K and $100K, these grants are proof-of-concept that let researchers compete for larger NIH and NCI grants. In the words of our founder, Dr. Lary Robinson, “We believe the key to defeating lung cancer is in taking a different prospective. We need to take a maverick approach to finding novel ideas and therapies.” And who likes novel ideas and maverick approaches more than knitters?
